8/19/2023 0 Comments Edison township tree removalITC has a way different view,? said Zanti. Throughout the last few years, when Edison would maintain the vegetation, they would trim the trees. ?Their answer to this issue is that it?s a cost-saving device. Where we have permission and where we have rights, we have been informing residents that we will be removing those trees and other high-growth vegetation.? ?ITC took a look at its vegetation maintenance standards and decided that the best way to ensure this does not happen is to remove all high-growth vegetation along that corridor. ?They have given each of the companies the discretion to determine how to go about maintaining vegetation and ensuring that these blackouts do not occur,? said Cheryl Eberwein, ITC?s media contact. In June, the regulations will come into effect and companies could face fines of as much as $1 million a day if contact with trees or other vegetation cause a loss in power. Under federal guidelines enacted in response to the blackouts of 2003, operators of power corridors are responsible for keeping vegetation from causing electrical outages. The corridor, previously owned and operated by Detroit Edison, is lined with trees and other vegetation that could eventually grow and cause power outages if the branches came into contact with the lines. The residents live along a corridor of power lines and towers owned by ITC Holdings Corporation. Zanti, along with several other residents throughout the township, were recently informed that many of the trees that fill their back yards would soon be removed, and there is not much township officials can do to stop it. If you buy a home in another area, they don?t have the kind of restrictions and protection for the trees that we have here.? ![]() ?But you buy a home in Shelby Township because of the trees. ![]() ?It?s kind of a joke at this point,? Zanti said. Driving down Van Dyke one day, Donna Zanti saw a sign proclaiming that Shelby Township was a ?Tree City.? Zanti, a township resident, said she had to suppress a chuckle.
